R.I.P Big L

For all you 'Hip-Hop Heads' out there, you already know about Big L or atleast you should. If you don't here's a little excerpt. And to add some 'credit' to this post, if you're a Kanye fan, he definitely knows about Big L and his lyrics. In fact, he used his name in his song 'The Glory' off of Graduation:
"I hear people compare themselves to BIG a lot/ You know BIG and Pac/ You know to get it hot/ I guess after I live I wanna be compared to BIG/ Anyone Big Pun, Big L, or Notorious!!"

Here's a little knowledge about the man himself:

Lamont “Big L” Coleman was equal parts freestyle king, storytelling genius and punch line specialist. Sadly, a week before he was reported to sign to then-conglomerate Roc-A-Fella Records, he was brutally gunned down just blocks from his Harlem home. But to those who knew him and knew of him, Big L was more than just a hometown hero, he was a legend in his own right. Check out a playlist of his music below.

So I know you all know how it is listening to the radio, you hear a song that you like by a new artist, watch the video, make it your ringtone, put it on your MySpace, then you learn the lyrics to the point you don't even want to hear it anymore!!

Well as this happens to the best of us, we begin to like the artist more and starve for a follow-up single with the same caliber. Well, what happens when the artist FALLS OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH?!

Well from here on out, when I'm listening to songs randomly, I will cast a "Where is Waldo?" report to try and find the artist.

Now don't bother me if I cast a report on an artist and they've actually put out tracks since their first hit and I just haven't had the time to hear it yet. Thanks in advance!!

Well I would like to kick this off with Lumidee.
The woman responsible for the 2003 hit "Uh Oh" feat. Busta Rhymes & Fabolous! WHERE HAS SHE BEEN SINCE??

I don't really know but I was listening to Pandora and one of her songs came on entitled "In It For the Money" feat. Snoop Dogg and I was NOT impressed. Sorry but this song just didn't do it for me. I think it has a lot to do with the hook?! 'I'm only in it for the moneeeyyy, this whole industry is funnnnyyy'....what the?!

So anyway, to wrap up this report, Lumidee released an album in 2007 entitled Unexpected and it sold 100,000+ in the U.S & 200,000+ in the UK!? Enjoy "Uh-Oh" & Check out "In it for the money" and let me know what you think!

Ok so I'm sure everyone that watches T.V has seen the new McDonalds commercial that looks like an R&B video. Well a friend I know posted on her FaceBook status that she, and I quote, "doesn't understand the new McDonalds commercial that looks like an Usher or Ne-Yo video...all for some mcnuggets?"

So this status caused an entire conversation and just so you can get the gist (and understand why I posted this on my 'music' blog....) here's the dialog (and for the sake of privacy...everyone will be labeled as 'Random' -- enjoy ;-)

Me: LOL c'mon you have to admit you thought that was a hot song before you realized it was for some chicken nuggets

Random Guy : It's quite catchy... and they're trying to get a "specific audience" to eat different items... Cuz that "specific audience" loves the Dollar Menu...lol

Status Owner : I'm not gonna lie I thought it was a new song!

Me : Me too!! I was even warned about it and I STILL fell for it......"You got a 10 piece don't be stingy" Ba da da da da I'm lovin' it!!

Random Woman 1 : That is my jam! Girl u got a 10 piece dont be stingjaaaaay! Has hip hop and r&b really fallen off so bad that Mickey D's can fool us with a commercial :-).

Status Owner : you are so crazy! "thats your jam" lol

Random Woman 2 : i can't STAND that stupid commercial!! Is that mess supposed to appeal to blacks?? McDonald's is becoming ridiculous.

Me : Well McDonalds is not the 1st to create a song for their product...Just last year (or maybe the one before) there was a radio commercial out about the Toyota Avalon. Kinda catchy too!! I think they had Will Downing singing it..??

Random Woman 2 : Who is Will Downing?

Status Owner : will downing sings "adult" r&b lol. I only know him for like one song years ago. but yeah I think mcdonalds is trying to appeal to blacks but I don't know why black people love the dollar menu and definitely the dollar sweet tea!

Random Woman 1 : I know that song Khalia is talkin about. It was very catchy!! And Im so serious . My cousin and I were singing it all wknd lol. And Tam I must say that our music is whats becoming ridiculous. So sad! Where's Jodeci when you need em??

Me : LOL @ Jodeci (I just had a vision of JoJo hi performing on stage) but I'm on the fence about 'our music'--I'll just say the wrong people get the fame and the right people are overlooked because music execs want what makes money...

Anyway....the dollar menu is getting a little skimpy...they actually took the nuggets off (and I only know because ... Read Morethat's all I would get) so that's why they need black people in their video/commercial...to persuade them to not be 'stingy' on the extra money for the 10 piece!!

Random Woman 1 : Good point.....there is still good music out there and it is definitely overlooked. I beez havin to school my kids errday on the fact that Soulja Boy is not real hip hop. If you gotta have a dance to ur song then I need u to sit down lol. For real doe, where's Jodeci? They get us all hype talking abt a reunion at the BET awards yrs ago and nothing! U cant tease us like dat.

Me : Lol 'status owner' like Soulja Boy....she's his 'Soulja Girl' but you didn't hear that from me.....

What to expect from this blog...

Ok, I think about music a LOT! I mean there are people out there who loves to watch TV and movies, play video games, talk on the phone etc. Well I love to listen to music!

I mean take tonight for instance. It was a perfect night to watch my all time FAVORITE movie 'Brown Sugar' [which ironically is about music?], but what did I do? I started bumpin an artist I was just introduced to by the name of YahZarah [check her out!] as well as The Foreign Exchange [who gave a great performance tonight at Chapel Hill! And listening to new tracks out on the web. I mean, I just can't help myself.

So with that being said, I need to pay more attention to my music blog! I don't have many followers because I don't post anything! So this will be my way of expressing myself as well as informing the masses about what's going on in music.

Now just for clarification, I have a Neo-Soul SHOW but I'm not necessarily a Neo-Soul DJ!
That means, just because I only play Neo-Soul on my show doesn't mean that's all I listen to or care about.

So anyway, in addition to the photos I'm going to put up about the different people I meet or concerts I attend, I'll probably do album reviews; I already have an album countdown up; I'll post my 'musical epiphanies' which could be something crazy I thought about, something new I've learned, or when I've figured out where an artist 'borrowed' lyrics or a producer sampled a song; and/or put artists that I've stumbled upon on BLAST! [And I'll probably start with YahZarah].

So sit back and get ready!!

What is 'Neo-Soul'?

According to About.com:: "Neo-soul is a musical genre that fuses contemporary R&B and 1970s-style soul with elements of hip-hop. As its name (new-soul) implies, Neo-Soul music is essentially modern-day soul music, with contemporary attitudes and sensibilities. It differs from contemporary R&B in that it's obviously more soulful, and it also tends to have deeper messages and meanings than R&B. In general, neo-soul has remained almost exclusive to R&B outlets such as urban radio and Black Entertainment Television.

The actual term "neo-soul" is believed to have originated with Kedar Massenburg of Motown Records in the late-1990s. The genre itself however, is considered to have originated in the mid-1990s with the work of Raphael Saadiq's former band, Tony! Toni! Toné! and with "Brown Sugar," 1995 debut album of singer D'Angelo. In 1997, Motown artist Erykah Badu released her debut LP, Baduizm, the success of which paved the way for Massenburg to shift much of Motown's output toward Badu's style.

*Basically, if it isn't played ALL the time on regular stations and it makes you feel good and bob your head...it's Neo-Soul!

**As for those artists who DON'T like the term 'Neo-Soul'...it makes me no never mind! It's my show and if I think it's Neo-Soul....then it is! I'll use my discretion of course :-)
